Vermont learner’s permit basics
A learner’s permit lets you practice — not drive solo. Adults 18+ still need a qualified companion while on a permit.
What the permit is for
Supervised practice on the road while you build hours and skills toward a junior or full license. Passing the knowledge exam is a step; completing the permit application and following companion rules still matter (especially for exams on or after May 1, 2025 — verify current process on DMV).
Who can ride beside you
Vermont expects a licensed, unimpaired companion in the front seat: typically a parent/guardian, a driver-ed instructor, or a licensed driver 25 or older. Confirm the current list on dmv.vermont.gov.
Practice hours (high level)
Teen paths commonly require substantial logged practice (including night hours) plus driver education before junior licensure. Exact numbers and clean-record windows change — read the free official manual VN-007 and the GDL pages before you plan a calendar.
